The Residents - Santa Dog (1972)

Hello again! For the second article today, I chose "Santa Dog" by The Residents (my favorite band). It was the first official release by The Residents, and the first release on Ralph Records. Lets take a look at this record, shall we?

The Residents recorded this recorded this in December of 1972, to send it to friends, artists, and even Richard Nixion. 500 were made, but 100 were destroyed, and the remaining 400 were mailed out. All copies had silk screen covers, but this caused even more problems. Due to the paint not drying in time, the sleeves of the gatefold got stuck together. After the release of the 7", numerous other versions of "Santa Dog" have been released, from "Santa Dog '78" to "Santa Dog 2012". Superior Viaduct reissued the original 1972 version in May of 2014.

Track listing:
- Fire
- Aircraft Damage
- Explosion
- Lightning

Dennis Duck - Dennis Duck Goes Disco (1977)

Howdy, everybody! Today, we'll be looking at another LAFMS release, "Dennis Duck Goes Disco". I mentioned it briefly in my "Dinosaur with Horns" article, but I wanted to go more in depth with it. Also, its my 5th favorite album of all time, so I thought it deserved its own article. Now, lets jump into it.

In 1977, Dennis Duck (Dennis Mehaffey) and Tom Recchion made a tape together using a German record player that had speeds going from 16 to 78 RPM, They also used techniques like smashing the records. The original cassette was released in 1977, and was a limited edition of 20 copies. Thankfully, Poo - Bah records reissued it, with even more tracks that were left off the original cassette. Here is the cover for the reissue.

Dinosaurs with Horns - Dinosaurs with Horns

Hello everybody! Today we'll be taking a look at Dinosaurs with Horns' self titled cassette. Very similar to an earlier LAFMS (Los Angeles Free Music Society) release, Dennis Duck's "Dennis Duck Goes Disco", this tape has many samples from old records. But unlike "Goes Disco", it has instrumentation from the band members as well.

The band itself consists of LAFMS regulars, Joseph Hammer, Rick Potts, and Tom Recchion. They recorded the tape from September to February of 1983, and released it in December of the same year. It was released on Solid Eye records. The number of copies is unknown.

Track listing:

A1: Dinosaurs with Horns
A2: Merge
A3: Totally Gone
A4: Sabertina's Country
A5:  Interesting Jewelry
A6:  Do it now!
A7: Ginky's Lament
B1: Shillelagh
B2: Absinthe
B3: Magic Fingers
B4:  Deep
B5: Walking Lady

Holy hell, Departmentstore Santas'  "At The Medieval Castle Nineteen 100 Years Lifetimes Since" is being reissued by Superior Viaduct! If you don't know anything about this record, here's the facts.

Departmentstore Santas is a name of a project by Joseph D' Angelo. The album in question was recorded on reel to reels and cassette decks during a period of time from 1981 to 1982. "Medieval Castle" was released in 1984, with a pressing of 500 copies. With such a low number pressed, the album has delved into obscurity, ranging in price from $60 to $300.

Here is my personal favorite song from the album, which is the only one with a (known) music video, "Kaleidoscope".

So, as you can probably tell, I'm very excited about this. Thanks, Superior Viaduct!
